8 Steps to a Healthy Brain
Brain Awareness Week is a global campaign to raise public awareness about the progress and benefits of brain research, including research into the causes of Parkinson’s disease and how to treat it. In celebration of Brain Awareness Week, which starts today, we are proud to present these 8 Steps to a Healthy Brain.
- Increase Your Heart Rate
Intense exercise can improve efficiency of your brain cells using dopamine by modifying areas of the brain where dopamine signals are received: the substantia nigra and basal ganglia.
- Eat a Healthy Diet
People with Parkinson’s need to stay away from a high-fat diet. Eating Mediterranean style may protect brain cells, slow degeneration and ensure a longer, healthier life.
- Give Your Brain a Workout
Research has shown that mental and physical exercise can help maintain thinking, memory and language skills.
- Stay Social
Don’t let Parkinson’s stop you from being social. Surround yourself with people who make you laugh and smile.
- Keep Calm and Fight On
Stress of any kind can make your PD symptoms temporarily worse. Relaxation techniques are helpful to manage stress in a positive way.
- Get Enough Sleep
Maintain a regular sleep schedule; get up and go to bed the same time everyday.
- Keep Track of Your Medications
Establishing a daily routine helps keep you on track with medications and exercise regiments. It can also help with sleep and digestion issues, which can affect people with Parkinson’s.
